Job Title: Therapist – Intern

Summary:

The main role is to develop a humanistic and empathetic relationship with those who are struggling with substance abuse disorders. This process will help promote trust and growth with clients who are faced with personal, family and social crises. Therapists will demonstrate mastery of scope of practice as evidenced by measurable performance evaluations of direct client services and written documentation skills. Therapist will participate in regularly scheduled consultation/peer group supervision in addition to attending weekly clinical program meetings. Responsible for collaborative documentation to all social service agencies including requests by physicians, legal issues, and family needs. Document client charts according to policy timelines to include: bio-psycho-social, master treatment plans, individual, family, group sessions, weekly status review, transition/discharge summary and other clinically indicated documentation.

Knowledge

  • An extensive knowledge of substance abuse and relapse.
  • Knowledge of current counseling practices and methods.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to existing professional ethical standards.
  • Extensive knowledge with co-occurring mood disorders.
  • Familiar with ICD-10 diagnostic codes
  • Understanding of grief and loss and how it affects the emotional well being of clients.
  • Understanding of process/behavior addictions
  • Understanding of self esteem / self compassion in the therapeutic context.
  • Knowledge of Impulse Control Disorder / OCD
  • Knowledge of gambling and shopping and all process addictive behaviors
  • Knowledge of eating disorders and disordered eating patterns
  • Therapists are required to be knowledgeable regarding current ASAM criteria based on insurance medical necessity criteria for all levels of care provided in agency.

  • Demonstrated customer service skills with the ability to effectively communicate with internal clients and external service providers.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills- must possess basic computer skills including working knowledge of Mac operating systems and demonstrated proficiency with Google Suite and EHR.
  • Interpersonal skills, possessing the ability to work with members of the clinical team and coordinate with other departments as necessary.
  • Organizational Skills- Determining time, place, and sequence of operations or actions to be taken on the basis of programmatic and client needs. May include prioritizing multiple responsibilities and/or accomplishing them simultaneously.

  • Helping clients manage feelings of loneliness, depression, or anxiety.

  • Therapeutically appropriate recordings of all interventions and interactions with the client, family and community agencies through progress notes in the chart/electronic medical record with master treatment plan guiding services.
  • Organizational Savvy – Operates within the organization’s formal and informal structures, builds allies and relationships across departments, uses allies to build consensus and create results, is appropriately diplomatic, understands others’ roles and perspectives.

Ability

  • Ability to form and maintain effective counseling relationships with diverse populations, to monitor client movement in the therapy process, to move resistant clients to a higher level of functioning, and terminate the relationship in appropriate ways.
  • Ability to plan, implement, evaluate, and report activities as they occur in the therapeutic process.

  • Developing and maintaining intimate relationships.
  • Ability to complete all required HR training within stipulated time periods. Ability to effectively communicate orally, both in person and by telephone.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate recovery programs, step work and give specific feedback to clients in a manner the clients can understand .
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and to prepare written documents. Ability to complete all UR insurance reviews prior to the scheduled date and time, with appropriate accuracy. Ability to maintain a consistent and dependable work schedule adhering to state requirements for employee work hours.
  • Timely attendance and punctuality is a requirement. Notification to direct supervisor is required prior to any tardiness or outage.
  • Ability to occasionally travel to meetings, other campuses, and counseling sites.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner.
  • RCA provides the therapist with a business phone with the expectation that regular monitoring occurs during off hours in the event of a client emergencies.
  • Attend mandatory weekly UR meeting attendance to collaborate with all members of staff to provide continuity of care.
  • Ability to instill positive coping skills, empowering clients to deal with difficult life changes.
  • The ability to forge a therapeutic and healthy relationship with clients, dealing with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors in a tactful, congenial, personal manner and promote a healthy recovery
  • Model socially appropriate and healthy behavior for clients
  • Clinical updates to family and/or referral sources (per HIPAA mandates with client consents) in accordance with RCA policies.
  • Provide regular therapeutic sessions with clients, as assigned or based on programmatic need, conducting individual, family and group therapy.
  • Process intakes on a rotational basis, amongst clinical staff who have been cross trained based on current caseloads.
  • Able to demonstrate crisis Intervention techniques using various de-escalation skills.
  • Ability to observe, evaluate and report on behavior, attitudes, and general emotional stability of clients and their family members in requisite daily / weekly documentation in order to assist in formulating treatment planning, discharge planning and other required documentation, by assessing social needs of individual clients.
  • Completion of all client documentation within organizational and professional timelines.
  • Integrity / Ethics – Deals with others in a straightforward and honest manner, is accountable for actions, maintains confidentiality, and supports company values.
  • Adhere to all RCA policies and procedures

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possess a valid license to practice as a Licensed Master Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor or Licensed Psychologist issued by the Texas State Board of Examiners.
  • Master’s Degree in a related discipline with two years of chemical dependency experience.
  • Experience in substance abuse and dual diagnosis residential treatment facility preferred.
  • CBT and evidence based experience programming knowledge, 12 step program understanding, understanding Stages of Change, and ability to evaluate stages of change.
  • Experience with trauma and eating disorders preferred.
  • Experience with providing prevention and early intervention behavioral health services.
  • Must have treatment experience with a high degree of clinical sophistication.
  • Trained to independently diagnose and treat mental health and substance abuse problems
  • Current certification in First Aid/CPR
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Current TB test clearance
  • Current California Personnel Health Facility Screening form

Salary: Depending on experience

Therapist will sign and acknowledge job description/revised job description which will be placed in the employee file. Therapists skills will be measured by management through regular routine quantitative and qualitative chart audits. Chart audits will reflect clinically appropriate content and timeline benchmarks of completion.

Therapist will be provided performance evaluations to measure performance areas. Inability to meet performance expectations will result in specific, short term performance enhancement action plan with a timeline to improve. Below average rating in employee performance will result in progressive disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
