The therapist at Sober College works directly with clients to directly assist them with their clinical needs. Under the direction of the Clinical Director, the therapist will engage in individual and group psychotherapy, with the students, to improve their overall mental health and functioning. Relapse prevention and brief therapy techniques should be paramount in the approach. The family specialist will focus on family work, completing comprehensive family assessments, determining the need for and breadth of family therapy in conjunction with the individual’s therapist, conducting family therapy and facilitating family weekend workshops as the lead facilitator.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities – Therapist

  • Prior to meeting with a client for the first time, review all applicable documentation from previous treatments and clinicians, including the admissions application. This may include psychological reports and should be available in Best Notes.
  • Check in with admissions personnel and Clinical Director to understand any direct care requirements or specialized circumstances.
  • It may be essential and required to have a conversation with previous treating professionals if available and necessary.
  • Perform a bio-psychosocial assessment on each client to assist in evaluation and treatment planning.
  • Review other assessments that are available for each client. (Emotional IQ and Neuropsych mini-screener.
  • Within the first 30 days, establish a treatment plan for each client as a way of engaging client in shared goals for therapeutic relationship.
  • Record all interactions with clients in Best Notes software.
  • At a minimum, establish weekly individual sessions with each client. Depending on the client, it may be necessary to establish more than once weekly sessions. It is important to be responsive to the needs of the client.
  • Group psychotherapy as needed and determined by the Clinical Director. It may be necessary to establish specialized groups as the needs of the population changes.
  • Be available to manage crises when on the property.
  • Adhere to all company policies regarding paperwork (progress notes, treatment plan reviews, and discharge summaries) requirements.
  • Help coordinate psychiatric hospitalization in conjunction with Clinical Director as needed.
  • Complete required documentation in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Interface with all departments at Sober College as indicated on an ongoing basis.
  • Participate in case management and group supervisions as needed and required.
  • Attend meetings within the community as needed.
  • Under no circumstances are you to engage in providing services to a client that is under the influence or actively using, unless it is towards entering them into treatment.
  • Conduct a comprehensive family assessment for each client including interviews with clients and family members.
  • Determine the need for family therapy and conduct family therapy when indicated.
  • Coordinate and facilitate family weekend workshops, which requires working closely with therapists as the lead facilitator, special events planner, and the rest of the treatment team to ensure a quality, streamlined workshop.

Education/Experience

  • L.C.S.W., L.M.F.T., or Licensed Psychologist preferred. And/or registered interns with at least 5 years’ experience with adolescent and young adults.
  • An understanding of the 12-step approach and a core understanding of issues related to addiction, recovery and young adults.
  • Ability to interact with all related people in a client’s life, including parents, referral sources and mental health professionals.
  • Must be able to learn/use necessary computer programs.
  • Must be registered with the BBS, have a valid state driver’s license and clean DMV driving record.
