Definition

Under supervision, provides individual, group, and family counseling, therapy, and referral services to psychologically disturbed or substance abusing clients and provides consultation, information, and education to community groups, schools, and agencies.
Distinguishing Characteristics

The Clinician I/II is a single class with two salary levels, and positions in this class are flexibly staffed.

Clinician I
The Clinician I is the entry level in this class series. Under close supervision, incumbents are given detailed instructions in the performance of tasks from a Licensed Clinician. These responsibilities are more closely supervised and generally more structured and repetitive than those assigned at Level II. As requisite skills and knowledge are developed, incumbents are expected to perform increasingly responsible and difficult assignments. Incumbents may advance to the higher level after demonstrating the ability to perform the full journey level duties of the class, which requires a minimum of two years of experience at Level I, and possession of a license.

Clinician II

The Clinician II is the journey level in this class series. This is the targeted competency and performance level of all Clinicians. Working under general supervision, incumbents are expected to be proficient in performing a variety of responsible and difficult assignments. The Clinician II may also be assigned responsibility for the planning and monitoring of a designated program or contract.

The Clinician II differs from the Supervising Clinician in that the latter is the supervisory class that requires regular, continuous performance of the full range of supervisory duties. Supervising Clinicians supervise, plan, assign, and direct the work of a specific unit of professional and/or paraprofessional staff in providing individual, group, and family counseling, alcohol and drug prevention and/or treatment services and also assumes program responsibilities for one or more programs, contracts, and/or functions.
