Paid MFTi Internship Opportunity Working with Children

Creative Health Services is currently accepting applications for a paid MFTi internship position in an after-school program in San Francisco for January-July 2017. The intern will serve as an After School Counselor in an after-school program at a SFUSD elementary school site in San Francisco’s Richmond District.

This program provides families with affordable after-school environments for children that are safe, fun, enriching in the arts, academically enhancing and culturally relevant. The program includes classes in visual art, nature and performing arts, daily tutoring and homework assistance, and structured recreational activities.

Working as After School Counselors, MFT intern will:

  • Observe and interact with children during program activities as a means of assessing social/emotional development and psychosocial/mental health needs.
  • Develop behavior plans for children who are exhibiting behavioral issues and coordinate implementation and monitoring of behavior plans with staff and parents.
  • Develop and implement therapeutic activities groups for children focusing on social skills, creative expression, rites-of-passage, relaxation skills/mindfulness training, and cultural awareness.
  • Collaborate with after-school program staff and provide psycho-educational support and training.
  • Meet with parents to provide psycho-educational support and community mental health referrals, and facilitate occasional evening parent support groups.
  • Coordinate and consult with other mental health/social service providers of children in the program.

This internship carries a monthly stipend of $250 and includes weekly group supervision with a licensed supervisor. The internship is 16 hours/week for the remainder of the school year, beginning in January through July 2017. Intern is required to be onsite M-Th 3-6 PM and attend group supervision on Wednesday evenings. Interns are able to accrue most of the 500 children’s hours required for MFT licensure. Prior experience working with children, especially in a school setting, is preferred. Cantonese, Mandarin, Russian, and Spanish are helpful for speaking with some parents.
