SUMMARY Counsels individuals and groups regarding psychological or emotional problems such as stress, substance abuse, mental or behavioral health issues and/or family situations and develops and implements therapeutic treatment plans by performing the following duties. The Therapist will perform duties while adhering to the organization’s values and principles.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Interviews client to obtain information concerning medical history or other pertinent information within 72 hours of admission.
  • Observes client to detect indications of abnormal physical or mental behavior.
  • Makes recommendations to treatment team for various tests such as psychological tests, personality inventories, and intelligence quotient tests, to identify behavioral or personality traits and intelligence levels and refers to outside provider as necessary.
  • Reviews results of tests with Psychiatrist to evaluate client needs.
  • Plans and administers therapeutic treatment to assist client in controlling disorders and other problems.
  • Changes method and degree of therapy when indicated by client reactions.
  • Discusses progress toward goals with client such as controlling, substance abuse, etc.
  • Consults with Psychiatrist or other specialists concerning treatment plan and amends plan as directed.
  • Conducts peer counseling groups and family counseling during clinical therapy sessions.
  • May co-facilitate Saturday Family Group.
  • Facilitate psycho-educational, topic, and process groups.
  • Attend Weekly Clinical Staffing Meeting.
  • Complete Charting and Documentation in accordance with documentation policies and procedures within 72 hours of completion of clinical session.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Master’s, Ph.D. or Psy.D. Level Degree or equivalent.

Substance abuse experience preferred.

The Therapist shall be certified or licensed in compliance with California law to provide Alcohol and Drug counseling in pursuant of section 13010, Title 9, Division 4, Chapter 8, Subchapter 2, California Code of Regulations or be a licensed professional that may include: LCSW, MFT, Licensed Psychologist, Physician, or registered intern in section 13015.

Within 6 months of the date of hire, all non-licensed or non-certified individuals providing counseling services in an AOD program must be registered to obtain certification as an AOD counselor by one of the approved certifying organizations [CCR, Section 13035 (f)].

Registrants are required to complete certification as an AOD counselor within five (5) years from the date of registration [CCR, Section 13035 (f)].

Certified individuals are required to provide documentation of completion of a minimum of forty (40) hours of continuing education and payment of a renewal fee to their certifying organization in order to renew their AOD certification during each two-year period [CCR, Section 13050 (1)].

Hands-on experience in Groups (process, psycho educational, and topic), Family Therapy, Individual Therapy (wide range of modalities accepted), and working with clients with addiction issues.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • MFT License or MFTi w/ California Intern Number
  • Psychologist License or PSB Number
  • May also have Chemical Dependency Counseling and/or Educator certification but not in lieu of the above.
  • Current adult CPR certification
  • Current adult First-Aid certification
  • TB Test: current test or results obtained less than 6 months prior to hire

TRAVEL REQUIRED

Frequent travel is required between local facilities. Must provide own transportation.
