COUSELOR/THERAPIST
Hawthorne Academy located in the city of Hawthorne is one of two private special education schools operated by Valley High School and Learning Center which has been in operation since 1988. Hawthorne Academy is a state certified private nonpublic school. The school serves students in grades 6-12. We serve a variety of special needs including specific learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, behavior and emotional problems, developmental and cognitive issues, and autism. The school has a strong therapeutic component where the student’s social-emotional needs are a priority. In the classroom we have a staffing ratio of at least 1 staff for every 4 students. We use a positive reinforcement program where students are rewarded for completing work, participating in class, and appropriate behaviors. The counseling staff has an active role in advising and supporting the teaching staff. We are looking for individuals who enjoy working with adolescents, and who want to be part of a team who changes student’s lives.
THE COUNSELOR MUST BE LICENSED (MFT, LCSW Licensed Psychologist). Licensed interns may be considered. The position is part time twelve (12) to eighteen (18) hours per week. There is some flexibility with the hours. Computer and organizational skills are required. Experience in a nonpublic (NPS) school setting and knowledge of Welligent are a huge plus. Counselor must have TB test results and submit to livescan fingerprinting prior to starting employment.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
1. Provide individual counseling to middle and high school special needs students. 2. Provide crisis intervention. 3. Work as a team in helping each student make progress and complete her/his goals.
4. Document weekly sessions for LAUSD students in LAUSD’s Welligent Service Tracking System.
5. Write Present Levels of performance (PLP) and goals for student’s IEP.
6. Participate in parent conferences and meetings with outside service providers.
7. Participate in staff meetings and advise and support administration, behavior and teaching staff.
